What do you think is the most dangerous creature the explorers
will encounter in Brazil? Perhaps the jaguar, wild boars
or piranhas? In fact more people die from bites from tiny
malaria carrying mosquitoes than any other creature in the
jungle. But the explorers will be well protected by drugs,
repellent and mosquito nets from this particular danger.
Other dangers the explorers could face include:
Heat exhaustion: It's extremely
hot and humid in the jungle. The explorers will need to
protect themselves against the sun and drink lots of water!!
Waterfalls: The explorers
will be canoeing an uncharted stretch of river close to
the source of the Rio Verde. The river could be fast flowing
and they will need to look ahead for waterfalls and rapids.
Snakes: The jungle is full
of venomous snakes and the explorers will protect themselves
with wide-brimmed hats (to prevent them from falling of
trees and down their shirt fronts!) and gaitors to protect
against ankle bites.
Ants and other biting insects:
There are plenty of these to watch out for and they're usually
big! Check your boots in the morning. The explorers will
be carrying a full first-aid kit, but must avoid bites which
require anti-venom at all costs.
Savage natives: No we don't
think so - but you never know - Percival Fawcett never returned
from his last expedition, he disappeared in the jungle under
mysterious circumstances!
Sprains and Breaks: The
terrain could be difficult to traverse in places and the
explorers will need to tread carefully.
The explorers are carrying a satellite phone which they
can use to call for assistance as a last resort.
"A poisoned hell that could never
be explored on foot,
60 foot anacondas capable of picking a man out of a canoe,
Savage ape men,
An infested plain of deadly snakes,
Bats so big they looked like pterodactyls,
Ferocious black panthers,
White Indian tribes,
Swarms of biting bees,
Fires in the distance,"
